People’s Forum of SOC in Xi'an

 

9 April 2018, the 1st Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) People's Forum was ceremoniously unveiled in Xi'an China. Co-organized by China NGO Network for International Exchanges (CNIE) and People's Government of Shaanxi Province, over 80 representatives from 12 SCO member states, observer states, and dialogue partner country governments, NGOs and think tanks were invited to participate in the forum discussions on how NGOs can make greater contribution to regional peace and prosperity with their unique strength and development.

 

The forum was themed on Mission of NGOs: Promoting Regional Peace and Cooperation and Building a Community of Shared Future. Topics of sub-forums include:

Ø Maintaining regional security and building a community of a shared future;

Ø Respecting cultural diversity and promoting Cultural Exchanges;

Ø Facilitating projects matching and expanding regional Cooperation;

Ø Eliminating poverty and improving people’s life.

 

In his opening speech, CNIE senior adviser Mr. Wang Yajun indicated that non-governmental exchange is an important drive facilitating SCO development and also one of the major cooperative activities among SCO member states. He stated that CNIE as China's biggest NGO consortium would work with NGOs in different countries to contribute to regional development and prosperity.

SRCIC Chairman Mr. Lu Jianzhong was invited to address the forum. Mr. Lu emphasized that NGOs, especially international business associations, were not only the initiators of international economic and commercial codes and rules but also the promoters of global trade cooperation and cultural interactions. Business associations have formed up as an indispensable force in building an international community with shared interests, shared responsibilities and a shared future. Therefore, business associations will be able to contribute more to policy making and standards matching among different countries so as to promote green investment, green trade and financial system development,and the understanding among peoples.

 

The forum was closed on April 10 with the forum document Xi'an Declaration of 1st Shanghai Cooperation Organization People's Forum to be submitted to SCO Qingdao Summit in June this year, stipulating the importance of NGOs in promoting regional peace and cooperation to build the community of a shared future.
